…photograph from 1877 (!), the impeccable Walt Whitman in a modern looking cardigan mit butterfly (cardboard)!

From the ribbing to the zigzag cabled front to the striped bands, this sweater would look right at home in most closets a mere 137 YEARS later in 2014.

I am not only blown away by the styling, I’m inspired by the knitting. :)

    Love this sweater! Time for the Whitman Cardi? Perhaps a whole line inspired by archival photos.

    I’ve been doing a lot of historical dreaming and researching –

    Last year I released HEY GIRL – which is my version of one of the first sweaters women wore, borrowing from menswear because there just wasn’t anything out there for them at the turn of the 20th century.
