New Threads Tuesday December 29, 2009

O boyo, this is a real old-fashioned winter we’ve got going here.

I think it’s safe to say we’ve been battered all around, from coast-to-coast: if you’re not covered in snow, you’re swimming in rain, and friends, in these parts, it’s chilly (Temperature: 9° — Wind chill: 1°).

My DNA is calling. It says: “Stay inside! Hunker Down in warm cozy clothes! Eat warm bread and chocolate!”

Not too hard to do when all of the above is onboard:

Chic Knits Mondo Cable Pulli

A little bit of the New FO over here and I’ve been living in this. I finally finished my Mondo Cable Pulli, knitted from Jeager PERSIA (discontinued) in a lovely grey flannel color.

This yarn is wool boucle that is plush and cushy and the sweater looks equally good with my black velvet stretch pants or jeans or even my black leather mini-skirt and black tights.

Underneath? I picked up several v-neck tees from old navy that were on sale after thanksgiving. They are very lightweight but with long sleeves and they add a nice insulating layer under almost anything without a lot of bulk. No peeking out from under the top layer either.

strekstrek2Or, if you want to get more Trekkie, a black turtleneck works too.

I just enjoyed the recent Star Trek movie, the one with the young Kirk & Spock. Might I say, this is probably the very BEST film ever on the Enterprise et all. The sequences with the child Kirk & Spock were very interesting and well done; and by the time they brought in Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, I was ready for anything.

But, god-help-me, everytime I see a v-neck with a turtlenect shirt underneath, I trip! And, I have no problem looking like I’m on the Bridge! There is something timeless about this combination that looks good on almost anyone I’ve seen it on.

And BTW, this sweater even looks good over jammies…

Looks so comfy….what would an alternative yarn be?

Jeesh, is this weather somethin? First, we get all that snow (after Christmas), now we are getting this artic chill….I’m stayin in today and knitting! Ah, this is the life.

  2. I love that sweater… I’m not brave enough to try and knit a sweater yet… I’m still cutting my teeth on scarves and hats…

  3. Susan says:

Wow! I’ve already knit one Mondo Cable Pulli and seeing this one makes me think I need to put another on the needles–this time I’ll make it a bit oversized and fuzzy. This is a sweater to spend the winter in!

  4. Melissa G says:

Love the pulli. The V-neck that is in my queue however is a Capt K for my brother-in-law, Kurt. I promised I wouldn’t make a red one; classic baby s**t yellow–might have to custom dye it.

  5. Karen B. says:

I luff the look of your Mondo sweater! And over jammies? Yes!

  6. Seanna Lea says:

I just rewatched the Star Trek movie a few days ago, and I think a number of the Vulcan outfits could be made into knits. They have that wonderful bulk and simple lines that shouldn’t (famous last words) be too hard to duplicate.

Goes with anything; My kind of sweater! Beautiful work!!

  8. Christina says:

yes, please suggest an alternative yarn that would provide the same drape and warmth without the weight.

  9. Bonne Marie says:

Hee! I don’t have a clue if there’s another yarn out there like this. :)

This was something that I pulled out of the stash that I”ve had for years and thought would never end up anywhere because it was a little weird…

  10. jeanne says:

Oh, hell – Karl Urban’s in Star Trek??!? Now I’ll have to see it. When I first saw him in LOTR, I thought, “GAH! This guy could make me do all kinds of BAD things…” FUN bad things…

  11. Mary says:

I love the way this looks in the yarn you chose!

I can’t tell from the pattern – are these raglan or set-in sleeves?

I’ve been knitting up Berroco Peruvian and it is lofty, light and warm. The only issue is that the yarn is a chunkier weight. I’d love to try it though – maybe if I knit a size small (I’m – cough, cough – not so small!)

  12. bwilliams says:

Great sweater–simple, clean lines, classic style, nice neutral color, wonderful texture–what more could you ask for? Hot cocoa maybe? Stay warm and keep knitting!

  13. Annegret says:

    Happy new year to you!

The sweater is fantastic. And the colour too.
