  Monday Morning Mirth

Sheep and other Barnyard Einsteins

ChicKnits is still EXHAUSTED from all the post-Oscar shenanigans of last weekend and has hot-footed it back to the farm where she belongs…

DID YOU KNOW: “Sheep, ridiculed for a non-questioning herd mentality, possess a sharp sense of individuality and can recognise the faces of at least 10 people and 50 other sheep for at least two years. Scientists at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge also discovered that sheep react to facial expressions and, like humans, prefer a smile to a grimace.”

So people, if you’re like me and just can’t work up the enthusiasm to beam (express amusement, satisfaction, or pleasure by brightening one’s eyes and curving the corners of one’s mouth upward) at the human commuter throng, promise today to work up a smile in honor of a just one woolie one…

I had to chuckle at this sheep info — my Irish grandmother used to have an expression for when someone had a romantic crush — “making sheep’s eyes at him” — because on their farm they swore the sheep would get this “look” in their eye when they saw another sheep they fancied!!

We kept sheep and goats for about 10 years and I can tell you that both are tremendously clever creatures. The really smart sheep are usually troublemakers (finding the weak points in electric fences, finding other sheep to bully out of their food and so on), so they are usually the first to get chosen for “the trip to Pepperoni-ville.” We once had a Dorset ram named Bill who had a run-in with my husband, who proceeded to grab him by the chin and have a face-to-face talk with him. My husband never had any problems with Bill again..he had to just give him the “look”.

After reading your post, I have a sheepish grin on my face.
