Adding an edge stitch to your work neatens the seam
when finishing and makes it easy to line up pieces.
My favorite is to knit the first and last stitch on
the right side of the work and purl the first and last
stitch on the wrong side.
You can also knit the first and last stitch on the
right side, then slip the first and last stitch purlwise
(with yarn in front) on the wrong side. This is especially
nice for belts and scarves, making a smooth, flat edge.
Knitting the first and last stitch of right and wrong
side rows makes an edge with a little bump that is decorative
and also helps the fabric to lie flat.
