LEG :
With the 3 mm needles, cast on 56 sts. Divide sts on 3 needles and join without twisting. Place a marker between the first and second sts (or use the tail from your cast-on) to indicate the beginning of the rounds. For ease in following these instructions, the needle at the beginnng of the round will be called Needle 1, the needle at the end of the round will be Needle 3 and the needle in the middle, Needle 2. Work K2, P2 rib for 16 rows, or desired length for ribbing, then work the leg in stockinette stitch for 56 rows.
HEEL :
At the beginning of the next round, work across 14 sts on needle 1; slip the last 14 sts on Needle 3 to this "heel needle" - 28 sts for the heel. Divide the remaining 28 sts on two needles to be worked later for the instep. Work the heel back and forth as follows: Row 1: (WS) Slip 1 as if to purl, purl to last st, K1, turn Row 2: (RS) Slip 1 as if to purl, take yarn to back between the needles, K1, slip 1 across, ending K1, turn Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 26 rows -end just having worked a RS row
TURN HEEL :
Row 1: (WS) Slip 1 as if to purl, P15, P2 tog, P1, turn
Row 2: (RS) Slip 1 as if to purl, K5, SSK, K1, turn
Row 3: Slip 1 as if to purl, P6, P2 tog, P1, turn
Row 4: Slip 1 as if to purl, K7, SSK, K1, turn
Row 5: Slip 1 as if to purl, P8, P2 tog, P1, turn
Row 6: Slip 1 as if to purl, K9, SSK, K1, turn
Row 7: Slip 1 as if to purl, P10, P2 tog, P1, turn
Row 8: Slip 1 as if to purl, K11, SSK, K1, turn
Row 9: Slip 1 as if to purl, P12, P2 tog, P1, turn
Row 10: Slip 1 as if to purl, K13, SSK, K1, turn
Row 11: Slip 1 as if to purl, P14, K2 tog
Row 12: Slip 1 as if to purl, bring yarn to back between the needles, K14, SSK - 16 sts remain
INSTEP :
Right side of heel facing, pick up, through both the front and back loops, 1 st in each of the slipped sts along the edge of the heel flap plus 1 st "in the corner" to avoid a hole (on our sock, this was 16 sts). Knit the instep sts onto one needle. With the 2 free needles, pick up 1 st in each of the slipped sts along the second edge of the heel flap plus 1 st "in the corner" (the same number as along the first edge, please) and knit 8 sts from the "heel needle" onto the this third needle. There will be 24 sts on Needle 1, 28 sts on Needle 2 and 24 sts on Needle 3 making the beginning of the rounds at the middle of the heel. (If you knit a shorter or longer heel flap, you will pick up fewer sts or more sts along the edge of the heels flap. The important thing is that you end up with 56 sts when the decreases are finsihed, not how you got there!
DECREASE FOR INSTEP :
Rnd 1: Knit Rnd 2: Work to 3 sts from the end of Needle 1, K2 tog, K1, Knit across Needle 2. Needle 3: K1, SSK, knit to end of round
FOOT :
Repeat these 2 rounds* until there are 56 sts remaining. Work in stockinette stitch for a total of 56 rows or 2.25" less than the desired finished length. * refer to "If the Sock Fits ..." for variations on this sequence of dec's
DECREASE FOR TOE :

Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 sts remain - 4 sts on Needle 1 Needle 3, and 8 sts on Needle 2. Knit the sts from Needle 1 onto Needle 3 so that the sts are arranged on 2 needles (8 sts and 8 sts) with the yarn coming from the end of one of the needles. Weave the toe.
